Precision Oncology in HER2 (ERBB2) Mutation and Guideline-Directed Targeted Therapies

October 23, 2026 – October 23, 2027

This activity is jointly provided by Global Education Group (Global) and GO2 for Lung Cancer.

This activity is supported by an independent medical educational grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this project is multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal care of patients with advanced mNSCLC, including those with HER2 (ERBB2)-mutations. This includes medical oncologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology pharmacists, molecular pathologists, oncology nurses and navigators, and other team members integral to diagnosis, biomarker testing, treatment selection, and toxicity management, especially those practicing in community, under-resourced, and rural settings, where disparities in access to biomarker testing and targeted therapies remain most pronounced.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

Advances in precision oncology have transformed the treatment landscape for patients with HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), creating new opportunities to improve outcomes through biomarker-driven care. As the understanding of HER2 biology continues to evolve, clinicians must remain current on the molecular characteristics, prognostic significance, and rapidly expanding therapeutic options available for this distinct patient population.

This educational activity provides an evidence-based overview of HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC, reviewing the biology of HER2 alterations, their relationship to the broader ErbB signaling pathway, and the implications for tumor behavior and treatment resistance. Participants will examine current standards of care, including FDA-approved and guideline-directed therapies, compare outcomes with conventional and targeted treatment approaches, and review pivotal clinical trial data supporting emerging therapeutic strategies. The activity also explores mechanisms of action, treatment selection, and toxicity profiles to equip clinicians with practical knowledge for optimizing individualized care for patients with HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

1. Describe the clinical and molecular characteristics associated with HER2 (ERBB2) mutations.

2. Assess the prognostic implications of HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC detection.

3. Describe outcomes of non-targeted (platinum-based chemotherapy, immunotherapy) and targeted therapies (directed antibody drug conjugate therapy, and HER2- selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor) regimens.

4. Discuss implications of the EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) and HER2 signaling pathways as both part of the ERBB2 family of receptor tyrosine kinases, and their central roles in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) pathogenesis and the implications of their interactions for tumor biology, drug resistance, and treatment strategies.

5. Identify FDA-approved and national guideline-directed therapies, their mechanisms of action, and side effect profiles.

6. Describe clinical trial data supporting the use of targeted therapies for HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC.

7. Summarize current national guideline-directed recommendations for first and second-line targeted therapy in HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC.
