Understanding NSCLC Histology and Oncogenesis of HER2 (ERBB2) Mutation in NSCLC

October 16, 2026 – October 16, 2027

This activity is jointly provided by Global Education Group (Global) and GO2 for Lung Cancer.

This activity is supported by an independent medical educational grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this project is multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal care of patients with advanced mNSCLC, including those with HER2 (ERBB2)-mutations. This includes medical oncologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology pharmacists, molecular pathologists, oncology nurses and navigators, and other team members integral to diagnosis, biomarker testing, treatment selection, and toxicity management, especially those practicing in community, under-resourced, and rural settings, where disparities in access to biomarker testing and targeted therapies remain most pronounced.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

This educational initiative aims to improve the quality and equity of care for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by addressing gaps in biomarker testing and treatment decision-making. In support of this goal, the course Understanding NSCLC Histology and Oncogenesis of HER2 (ERBB2)-Mutant NSCLC is designed to enhance learners’ knowledge of tumor histology, molecular drivers, and the clinical significance of HER2 mutations. The activity responds to evidence showing that only 50% of eligible patients receive guideline-concordant biomarker testing, with delays in results contributing to suboptimal treatment selection and poorer outcomes, particularly when empiric therapy is initiated prior to testing. Additionally, persistent disparities in testing and targeted therapy use, linked to factors such as race, insurance status, and smoking history, highlight the need for improved education. This course seeks to equip clinicians with the foundational understanding necessary to support timely, appropriate, and equitable biomarker-driven care.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

1. Identify histologic subtypes of NSCLC and their molecular features.

2. Summarize the role of HER2 (ERBB2)- alterations (gene mutation, amplification, and protein overexpression) in NSCLC development.

3. Discuss hyperactivation of mutant HER2 receptors through increased homo- or heterodimerization and autophosphorylation.

4. Discuss how HER2 signaling pathways like MAPK, PI3K/AKT, PKC, and STAT result in uncontrolled cell proliferation and the development of HER2 (ERBB2)-mutant NSCLC.
