Financial Toxicity and Policy Implications for Access to Biomarker Testing and Targeted Therapies

October 16, 2026 – October 16, 2027

This activity is jointly provided by Global Education Group (Global) and GO2 for Lung Cancer.

This activity is supported by an independent medical educational grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this project is multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal care of patients with advanced mNSCLC, including those with HER2 (ERBB2)-mutations. This includes medical oncologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology pharmacists, molecular pathologists, oncology nurses and navigators, and other team members integral to diagnosis, biomarker testing, treatment selection, and toxicity management, especially those practicing in community, under-resourced, and rural settings, where disparities in access to biomarker testing and targeted therapies remain most pronounced.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

This activity explores the evolving role of comprehensive next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), highlighting key considerations for selecting appropriate biomarker testing strategies and interpreting results in clinical practice. Participants will examine the differences between single-gene and broad-panel testing approaches and gain insight into the clinical value of early detection of HER2 (ERBB2) mutations.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the policy landscape influencing access to comprehensive biomarker testing, including less common but targetable biomarkers.
  2. Describe the concept of financial toxicity and its impact on patient access to biomarker testing and targeted therapies in oncology.
  3. Examine the relationship between healthcare policy decisions and disparities in access to precision oncology, including insurance coverage and reimbursement practices.
  4. Assess current policy interventions and solutions needed to mitigate financial barriers to biomarker testing and targeted treatment for all.
